Connections between Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence
This week marks the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). As a Domestic Violence shelter, we know all too well that sexual assault plays a part in the lives of our survivors. As RAINN states, “Sexual assault in a relationship rarely exists in a vacuum. It often occurs alongside other forms of abusive behavior. The majority of women who were physically assaulted by an intimate partner had been sexually assaulted by that same partner.” (source).
Did you know it’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month? The new Abby Honold act would reform training for sexual assault investigators. Learn more here.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between 40 and 45 percent of women with abusive partners will be sexually assaulted by their abuser during the course of their relationship. (source).
Are you a survivor of sexual assault? If so, there are many organizations out there to help YOU! Call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area. More detail here.
Afraid or unable to call 911? Minnesota now takes texts to 911.
Tuesday, April 3 is Sexual Assault Awareness Month day of action. We encourage you to wear teal on this day and throughout the month!
